Yes, you are right that the WI ID will not be there in this case ... for your log if you generate it instantly and show it to the user.
But, if you are using the application log, you can write to it from the task method. Online, you can just refer the user to check SLG1 with the SLG1 selection criteria (Object and Sub object will remain same as you would have definedand the External ID can be the Event Key).
